Description
Evening Capital Weekend Edition from Saturday 6 May 1961, the day after Alan Shepard became the first American in space. The Evening Capital, now called The Capital, is a daily newspaper published in Annapolis, Maryland.
The headline reads: “Shepard ‘Feels Great’ After Space Hop.” Shepard reached an altitude of 187 kilometres during his 15-minute suborbital flight, which took place just over a month after the Soviet Union’s Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space.
The paper includes articles about Shepard’s wife, what he did immediately after his flight, and President Kennedy’s reaction to his achievement.
