STS-51-L was the Challenger disaster. Shortly after launch a booster on the Challenger shuttle failed, causing the spacecraft to break apart. Tragically, all seven crew members lost their lives. The launch was broadcast live on television in the United States due to of the presence a civilian teacher, Christa McAuliffe, who would have been the first teacher in space.
